Takikawa at a Glance

Conveniently located between the cities of Sapporo and Asahikawa,

Takikawa is a regional center in the heart of Hokkaido.

While Takikawa is known outside of Hokkaido for marinated Jingisukan lamb,

Aigamo duck, and rice, it is more than just a place to eat;

Climate:
Takikawa’s yearly average temperature is about 7.5 degrees Celsius (45.5 degrees Fahrenheit). In the spring when many visitors come to see the canola fields, the average temperature is about 12 degrees Celsius (53.6 degrees Fahrenheit). Yearly lows can drop below -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit), while highs can exceed 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). Takikawa sees about 1,000 millimeters of yearly rainfall and about 7 meters of annual snowfall. Because of the heavy snowfall in winter, snowplows are often deployed overnight.
Tourism:
Visitors flock to Takikawa in mid-to-late Spring to see the gorgeous yellow canola flower fields. From early spring to late fall, glider pilots at Takikawa Sky Park let visitors soar above the wide Hokkaido landscape. In February the city lights up in the glow of over 10,000 handmade paper-bag lanterns. Access:
Takikawa is easily accessible by road and rail. National Routes 12, 38, 451, and the Hokkaido Expressway all pass through Takikawa. Japan Rail (JR) also connects Takikawa to Sapporo and New Chitose Airport to the south, as well as Asahikawa to the north.
